I forced myself to stay calm and not make Stu regret what heâd shared. But damn, I couldnât imagine him going through that much heartache. He had to be one of the hardest working men Iâd ever met, but heâd buried all his hurt in his work, and even I knew that wasnât healthy.
âDid you ever try to find her?â I asked as I rubbed his back, and he relaxed a little.
âNo, I decided that if sheâd gone to that much trouble and planning then there was nothing to save, and it was better to do my best for Mariah than spend time on a person who didnât want anything to do with either of us.â His voice broke and I knew every memory caused him emotional pain. Pain for his daughter, and a marriage he probably expected would last a lifetime.
âHave you tried to meet someone else? I mean there has to be a nice girl around town somewhere that would love to be in your life.â
He hesitated before he answered, but then he pulled me close and spoke in a low voice. âI never was as attracted to girls as I was to boys. My brother is gay, but he has no idea Iâm the same. I never really found a way to tell him.â
I wasnât sure what to say, so I said nothing. He sighed and relaxed even more, and I didnât mind holding him up. Heâd helped me at my worst moment and never questioned it. I owed him more than heâd ever realize. âYou have to do what makes you happy, and if youâre never comfortable telling another person, thatâs okay. Itâs your choice.â
âI love my brother, and I know heâd understand, but Iâm just afraid heâll judge me for what happened with Taylor. Heâs asked me so many times why it didnât work out, but only my dad knows the whole story.â
âDonât worry about it. Someday you might want to tell him, but until then itâs not really his business.â
âYou donât know my brother,â he said, and I could hear his smile in his voice.
âDidnât you say he has a salon in Sacramento?â
âYeah,â he said, and explained the area where it was located. âHeâs lived there a few years now. Iâm not sure what theyâll do when they get married. He loves where he works and so does Link, his fiancé.â
âHe lives here?â
âYes, remember I told you his land is on the western edge of mine. Heâs a great guy. Iâm sure youâll meet them both soon.â He pulled back then and met my eyes.
Something passed between us, and for a moment I thought he was going to kiss me. His eyes focused on me, and he slowly reached his hand out to brush his fingers lightly across my cheek. âIâve wanted to touch you since I found you lying in the middle of the road.â
I should have laughed but the intensity of his eyes made it hard for me to look away. âDonât look at me like that,â I whispered.
